Below are a few questions that we have been asked over the years. You may find your answer here. We tell it like it is. Not every stove is the perfect fit for every person in every situation. The NiGAS model 19 solo was designed with dependability, simplicity, and economy as the key features. If you still have a question, please contact us.

Can I use white gas in the stove?

The NiGAS model 19 solo is designed to burn denatured alcohol only. Although denatured alcohol formulas vary, they contain ethanol and/or metanol. Never use white gas, gasoline, kerosene, paint thinner or any other flammable liquid other than alcohol. Although isopropyl alcohol will burn in the stove, it does not burn cleanly, and is not recommended as a suitable fuel.

Does the stove work at high altitudes?

Yes. The NiGAS model 19 solo has been tested at elevations up to 14,110 feet. Although boil times will vary with altitude, the stove performed well.

Can I use the stove indoors?

When the stove is running there is an open flame and it will get hot. As long as there is adequate ventilation and you take the proper safety precautions to ensure that there is nothing combustable around or under the stove, it can be used indoors. The stove should never be used inside of a tent or other confined space.

Can I use any size pot with the stove?

The NiGAS model 19 solo is designed to be used with small, backpacking-style pots. Larger pots will not be stable on the pot stand and may tip over. Large heavy pots will also be inefficient and you will experience longer time to boil.

Does wind or temperature affect boil times?

Yes. Wind, starting fuel temperature, and starting temperature of the water will all have a significant affect on boil times. This is true of all alcohol stoves. It is recommended that you become familiar with the operation of your stove in a controlled environment prior to having to use it in the wild.

Can I use the stove to melt snow in the winter?

Alcohol stoves in general do not perform well in cold weather. Cold fuel does not vaporize well and the ground will act like a heat sink, drawing heat away from the stove. The process also consumes a lot of fuel. If your primary use for the stove is to melt snow for drinking/cooking water, a high quality (expensive and heavy) white gas stove may work better.

We are under a fire ban. Can I still use this stove?

The NiGAS model 19 solo is an ultralight liquid alcohol fueled stove. Check with the local authorities or Ranger Station to see if the use of this stove is permitted during the ban.
